It would be cool to also be able to mock locations for other apps. This is because I wasn't able to find clarity about the behaviour of LocationManager.

This will effect all location clients connected using the FusedLocationProviderApi, including geofencer clients i. Unfortunately LocationManager docs does not state the specific behaviour when using TestProviders. What I'm interested about is if LocationManager serves the mocked locations to other apps and if so has the advantage that the mocked locations are served to any client irrespective of the client using FusedLocationProvider or LocationManager?

In most cases, you are interested in the user's current location, which is usually equivalent to the last known location of the device. Specifically, use the fused location provider to retrieve the device's last known location. It manages the underlying location technology and provides a simple API so that you can specify requirements at a high level, like high accuracy or low power.

It also optimizes the device's use of battery power.

Fused Location Provider API

Note: When your app is running in the background, access to location should be critical to the core functionality of the app and is accompanied with proper disclosure to users.

This lesson shows you how to make a single request for the location of a device using the getLastLocation method in the fused location provider.

Set up Google Play services To access the fused location provider, your app's development project must include Google Play services. Apps whose features use location services must request location permissionsdepending on the use cases of those features.

In your activity's onCreate method, create an instance of the Fused Location Provider Client as the following code snippet shows. Once you have created the Location Services client you can get the last known location of a user's device. When your app is connected to these you can use the fused location provider's getLastLocation method to retrieve the device location.

The precision of the location returned by this call is determined by the permission setting you put in your app manifest, as described in the guide on how to request location permissions. To request the last known location, call the getLastLocation method.

The following code snippet illustrates the request and a simple handling of the response:. The getLastLocation method returns a Task that you can use to get a Location object with the latitude and longitude coordinates of a geographic location. The location object may be null in the following situations:. You might expect the Location object that's contained in the most recent call to getLastLocation to be the most accurate. However, because the accuracy of a location varies, the most recent value isn't necessarily the best.

Get the last known location

You should include logic for choosing which location to show based on several criteria. The set of criteria also varies, depending on the use cases of your app and results from field testing. Finding a solution that is also battery-efficient is even more complicated. The fused location provider is a location API in Google Play services that intelligently combines different signals to provide the location information that your app needs.

The fused location provider manages the underlying location technologies, such as GPS and Wi-Fi, and provides a simple API that you can use to specify the required quality of service. For example, you can request the most accurate data available, or the best accuracy possible with no additional power consumption.

Get location data for your app based on combined signals from the device sensors using a battery-efficient API. Last Known Location Using the fused location provider API, your app can request the last known location of the user's device.

fused location provider vs location manager

Getting the last known location is usually a good starting point for apps that require location information. Deciding which sources to use can be challenging, but the fused location provider API removes the guesswork by automatically changing the appropriate system settings.

All your app must do is specify the desired level of service. Location Updates In addition to the last known location, the fused location provider API can deliver location updates to a callback in your app at specific intervals. You can specify the desired interval as a parameter of the quality of service. By using location updates, your app can provide additional information such as direction and velocity. This guide introduces location-awareness in Android applications and illustrates how to get the user's location using the Android Location Service API, as well as the fused location provider available with the Google Location Services API.

Android provides access to various location technologies such as cell tower location, Wi-Fi, and GPS. The details of each location technology are abstracted through location providersallowing applications to obtain locations in the same way regardless of the provider used.

This guide introduces the fused location provider, a part of the Google Play Services, which intelligently determines the best way to obtain the location of the devices based on what providers are available and how the device is being used. As a general rule of thumb, applications should prefer to use the fused location provider, falling back the older Android Location Service API only when necessary. In Android, no matter what API you choose for working with location data, several concepts remain the same.

This section introduces Location Providers and location-related permissions. Several technologies are used internally to pinpoint the user's location. The hardware used depends on the type of location provider selected for the job of collecting data. Android uses three location providers:. It uses less power than the GPS Provider, but returns location data of varying accuracy. Passive Provider — A "piggyback" option using providers requested by other applications or Services to generate location data in an application.

This is a less reliable but power-saving option ideal for applications that don't require constant location updates to work. Location providers are not always available. If a specific provider is not available, choosing that provider might return null.

A location-aware application needs access a device's hardware sensors to receive GPS, Wi-Fi, and cellular data. Access is controlled through appropriate permissions in the application's Android Manifest. There are two permissions available — depending on your application's requirements and your choice of API, you will want to allow one:.

Optional permission for the Network Provider. For apps that target API version 21 Android 5. If your app requires GPS hardware, you should explicitly add an android. For more information, see the Android uses-feature element reference. To set the permissions, expand the Properties folder in the Solution Pad and double-click AndroidManifest.

The permissions will be listed under Required Permissions :. Setting either of these permissions tells Android that your application needs permission from the user in order to access to the location providers. Devices that run API level 22 Android 5. On devices running API level 23 Android 6. You should never have to set both permissions, only the minimal permission your app requires to work.

Apps must be tolerant of the scenario where the user will not grant permission or has revoked the permission and have a way to gracefully deal with that situation. Please see the Permissions guide for more details on implementing run-time permission checks in Xamarin.

The fused location provider is the preferred way for Android applications to receive location updates from the device because it will efficiently select the location provider during run time to provide the best location information in a battery-efficient fashion. For example, a user walking around outdoors gets the best location reading with GPS. If the user then walks indoors, where GPS works poorly if at allthe fused location provider may automatically switch to WiFi, which works better indoors.

Has a low round in him and not going to get better odds on him now. Is one under par and very much in the hunt. I am ecstatic that I can now get on him as I thought the opportunity had passed. He is level par, got a good chance to do well even if it is just at each way. Knows his way around a links course and will have incredible home support as he comes from Southport. He is 9th in the world won the BMW PGA Championship a month ago and has four top tens this year in total, we also know he can win on links.

The weather is set to be pretty mixed with showers and strong winds, the trickier the conditions the better his chances I feel.

He still very much has the game to compete and at this price he has a great each way chance. He is a player who really rises to the big occasion and had incredible form on links courses in 2016.
